The musical style of the group primarily focusses on rock and alternative rock, with elements of grunge and new wave punk shining through as influences to their playstyle.
Named after the novel The Wasp Factory by Scottish writer Iain Banks, the band consists of four members, Kallum “Delf” Delf, Jonny Brewster, Matt Clamp and Nathan Wiggett. Originally the band was formed after a few coincidental meetings led to “Delf” and Jonny creating a few songs whilst jamming together. After a few ideas had been formed Jonny met Nathan, enlisting him to the band, and shortly after Matt joined, forming the four piece that currently makes up Wasp Factory.
Jonny Brewster provides the lead guitar for the band. Originally from Saddleworth, just outside Manchester, Jonny came down to study University at Southampton. Providing the band with most of their solos and intricate riffs, Brewster’s play style is not too far off the likes of Mark Knopfler. Sporting a Gibson SG, Jonny walks in the footsteps of Angus Young.
“Delf” Takes this role, adding a more alternative rock chord structure and unusual tunings to the songs, most noticeably in Fell in Love with a Dream. “Delf” is the lyrical genius of the group, providing a lot of the lyrics for the band’s songs. Originally from Chelmsford Essex, Kallum is no stranger to stage performances, tackling acoustic sets and performances from a young age.
From the city of Coventry comes Matt Clamp, whose bass lines throughout the band’s songs add influences of early blues songs to the musical style of the group. Clamp’s excellence really shines through when it comes to improvisational work, quickly thinking on the spot to lay down a bass line or riff to tie up each song beautifully. Matt was formerly a bassist of the band The False Endeavour, however due to a change in location had to quit the band, which Wasp Factory was more than happy to welcome.
The oldest member, but by far the least experienced, comes in the form of Nathan Wiggett. Having no real experience behind a drum kit. Nathan was added as a bit of a risky move on behalf of Jonny, however he quickly learnt and was able to adapt to the playstyle of the band. Songs such as I Just Wanna (get high with you) and Bad Times showcases Nathan at his best, with unique drumming rhythms heard throughout the songs. From the small town of Sawbridgeworth, in Hertfordshire, Wiggett’s playstyle heads the punkier sounds heard in the band.
This role is shared between Jonny and “Delf”. Jonny takes the lead for most vocals adding his impressive vocal range and northern twang to the songs he sings. The husky voice of “Delf” adds variety and depth to the musical range of the band in songs such as: ‘Fell in love with a dream’ and I Just Wanna (Get High with You).
